ArlingtonWeaves, ETC, is a program for adults with
intellectual and developmental disabilities, where skills of independence, socialization, and
creative design are learned through the art of handweaving. It was started by a local group of
parents in the 1970s. Today, it is operated by ServiceSource and funded through Arlington
County. This partnership facilitates program participants’ artistic development and inspiration
through community-based art classes and visits to local museums. Their imagination and
individual expressions come to life in uniquely handwoven fabric, then crafted into sellable
merchandise such as totes, makeup bags, and scarves. For each item sold, the weavers receive
100% commission. These talented artists have created several woven and fiber art pieces which will be for sale and on display at the Arlington Artists Alliance Gallery.
