Excellence in Fibers XI
Excellence in Fibers XI showcases the best in fiber and textiles. Once again, artists have pushed the boundaries of fiber, creating installations, sculptures, vessels, wearables, and more. Using a variety of materials and techniques, artists presented us with works to celebrate. We are always amazed at the talent that surrounds us. Enjoy.
Reimagining Furniture Cast-offs
Eve Collett is the founder of Casamento Design, a small company in South Africa that creates unique upholstered furniture and hand-embroidered cushions. Cast-off furniture is resurrected in ways that honor the makers’ African heritage. It’s a team effort. Read more in our Business column.
An Icon of Fiber Art
Sheila Hicks is one of the world’s best-known fiber artists. Her works, ranging in size from miniature to monumental, have stretched the limits of fiber in creative ways for more than half a century. In our new Icon column, read about her masterful work and her inspiring exhibit at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Feathered Feature
Kate MccGwire’s work is complicated. Fascinated by the colors and patterns of feathers, she has elevated the simple feather to new artistic heights. She describes her work as “beautiful and strong but disquieting.” Discover how this feature artist acquires her materials, creates her work, and the unique way she presents it.
Earth Science Meets Fiber Art
Feature artist Emma Jackson decided the ground beneath her in Australia should be celebrated. Combining her knowledge and skill as an architect with her enthusiasm for earth science, Jackson went on to create a “soft form of architectural design”… rugs. Her tapestries are full of color and meaning. Be sure to read more about her intriguing work.
Unexpected Materials
The eye of an artist never rests. Artist Katie Truk saw beauty and artistic potential in the mundane…pantyhose. With simple materials, she creates colorful sculptures that transcend their humble beginnings. Learn more about Truk and her art in the On Our Radar column.
