Process Column
Combining paint and thread, Jen P. Harris’s loom paintings capture the imagination. Her works begin with a base of painted figures, patterns, and shapes. A woven overlay provides glimpses of what lies beneath. Discover how she creates a sense of mystery in her art in our Process column.
Featured Artist
A leap of faith led Disney fabricator to her current life as an artist. As a fabricator, feature artist Sato Sugamoto brought the ideas of others to life; as an artist she revels in sharing her own. Using a variety of colorful cords, yarn, string, plastic tubing, electrical cords, and wires, she fashions her sculptures line by line, endeavouring to make “invisible thoughts and emotions physically present.” Learn more about her work in this issue.
Featured Artist
At first glance, feature artist Ana María Hernando’s works may look fanciful, but her work with tulle is so much more. Hernando’s goal is to give tulle a different personality. She wants her art to represent the energy of “the feminine.” Her color-drenched art draws viewers in, and her carefully selected titles express the underlying meaning. Enjoy her spirited art in her feature article.
Business Column
Cindy Hulej is “an artist who has fully mastered the marriage of art and craft.” Her love of music and art merge in her highly valued guitars. Using wood salvaged from historic New York City buildings and an amazing array of embellishments, her guitars are boldly unique—so was her approach to getting where she wanted to be. Read about her journey and her guitars in our Business column.
Campus Column
Like many today, artist Paweł Robuta believes we need to produce less and make better use of what we already have. Having decided from a young age that he wanted to work in fashion, he works hard to promote sustainability in the industry. Learn about his art and his work in our Campus column.
On Our Radar
Maude Corriveau’s process involves manipulating fabric sculpturally . . . folding, hanging, and arranging it in relation to light. Cloth has a foundational place in Corriveau’s world. In On Our Radar, learn about her figurative works and how they offer viewers a moment to pause and linger.
Studio Column
No longer inspired by paint in his early career, Pim Palsgraaf set out on a journey that resulted in him discovering a whole new approach . . . and ultimately his niche. His complex artwork led him to unconventional workspaces and tools. See his distinctive art and read about his practice in our Studio column.
Vivid Exhibition in Print
For our VIVID Fiber Call for Entry, we asked artists to create fiber art that projected a strong response. It could be a color, a memory . . . a sensation, something that suggested energy and power. They did not disappoint. Vessels and baskets, colorful installations, felted works, colorful quilts and woven pieces, and more, came together to create a print exhibition that is exciting and vibrant. Be sure to check it out.
